To Treat or Not To Treat
I do not rely on treats as a reward for dogs over 7 months for several reasons. Treats are good for teaching simple commands such as Sit, and can often get a younger dog to come when called, but fall short beyond the puppy stage. Treats to distract a dog from barking at other dogs on the street or lunging out at cyclists often solve the problem in the moment, but do not teach the dog to not do the behaviour at all. Dogs often know right from wrong, they just don't care, and treats will not convince them to change their mind. So we need to apply techniques that work in the dogs' favour, and make sense to the dog at the age and stage the dog is at.
